What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment which involves applying a chemical solution to the face for the purpose of exfoliation. This reveals smoother, softer, and more even skin while often stimulating new collagen production for a more youthful look. Chemical peels are available in a range of formulas ranging from superficial to deep exfoliation. This means that a wider range of patients can benefit from chemical peels and treat issues from mild dullness through deeper-set wrinkles.

Benefits of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels have a range of benefits and can be tailored to suit many patients’ concerns. Some of the conditions or issues that can be improved with a chemical peel include:

  • Fine lines & wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Pigmentation concerns
  • Acne scarring
  • Age spots
  • Oily skin

The Chemical Peel Procedure

The chemical peel process begins by first thoroughly cleansing your skin. The chemical solution can then be applied using tools such as brushes or gauze. The peel will then be carefully timed. During this time, you may feel sensations from warming to mild stinging, depending on the type of peel you receive. Fans can be used to cool the skin as needed. When the peel is complete, a neutralizing solution is applied and the products are removed.

What to Expect After a Chemical Peel

Your expectations after a chemical peel will vary depending on the type of peel you receive.

After a superficial chemical peel, you can expect the skin to temporarily appear darker or lighter as you heal. The outer layer of skin will gently exfoliate within about four to seven days to reveal your results. Through this period, you should see minimal if any side effects and can generally go about your routine as normal.

After a medium chemical peel, you will likely see some slight swelling before the skin develops some crusts or brown patches. This will heal within about five to seven days, ultimately revealing the new, healthy skin below. You can also expect some redness.

After a deep chemical peel, you will require some downtime and can expect more significant swelling, redness, and discomfort. Ice packs or fans can help alleviate discomfort. Generally, you can expect about two weeks of recovery before the skin heals after a deep chemical peel. This will include significantly reduced wrinkles, folds, skin laxity, or age spots.

Through recovery after any type of chemical peel, it is important to follow any skin care directions carefully, including wearing SPF daily and avoiding sun exposure until healing is complete.
