Laser hair removal is a permanent hair removal procedure which can be used for many areas of the body or face. The most popular areas to treat include the legs, underarms, back, or chest. Laser hair removal involves directing laser energy to the hair follicles. The heat from the laser damages the hair follicle, typically to the point where the hair does not re-grow, whereby destroying the root.
The Laser Hair Removal Procedure
Depending on your unique scenario, you and our provider will determine how many treatments you will need and how often you will need them.
Patients with dark hair and light skin may potentially require fewer treatments then those patients with various other skin and hair colors. For patients with sensitive skin, a numbing cream can be applied prior to your treatment. Many patients describe the sensation as if a rubber band was snapping against your skin. Additionally, most patients feel waxing is significantly more painful. Laser hair removal can be completed in sessions which last about thirty minutes on average, and no more than an hour.
While many patients will notice a significant reduction in unwanted hair after a few sessions, the entire course of treatment suggested by your provider will be necessary to achieve optimal results. Some hair re-growth will appear overtime which makes touchup treatments a must for most patients.
What to Expect After Laser Hair Removal
There is no downtime or extended recovery period required after a laser hair removal session. Some redness or slight sensitivity may occur, but you should not experience much discomfort. It is important to avoid direct sun exposure in the treatment area as much as possible and to wear SPF as directed throughout your laser hair removal treatment.
You can expect to see a reduction in hair immediately after your laser hair removal, though some hair will regrow beginning about two to eight weeks after each session as not all hair follicles can be treated during a single session. Your laser hair removal technician will evaluate the amount of hair lost after your first treatment session to better plan for your total number of sessions required to totally remove the hair. After your laser hair removal is complete, you may see a small amount of hair regrowth, which will be lighter, finer, and sparser than the hair before treatment. Regular touchup treatments are usually necessary.
