What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine determines how and why illness occurs and then searches to find the root causes for disease in an individual in order to restore health.

Diseases, such as depression, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer can have many causes. Every person is an individual with unique characteristics and genes, as well as different eating habits and environmental factors. In functional medicine, we search to find the root cause of disease before implementing a treatment plan. Symptoms and diagnoses are just means we use to describe disease. They are not the actual reason for why disease is occurring in an individual. For example, a person can have symptoms such as inability to get out of bed, lack of desire for sex, loss of appetite, and feelings of hopelessness. This same person can be given a clinical diagnosis of depression, but the diagnosis of depression is not a root cause for these feelings. Anti-depressants are just a band-aid used to help fix the problem. In functional medicine, we search to find out what is truly causing the depression. It may be caused by an undiagnosed gluten intolerance, improper hormone levels, low Omega 3 levels, B12 or Vitamin D deficiency, Mercury toxicity, or many other causes.  Once the cause is determined, a personalized plan can be developed which leads to better patient outcomes.
